Fire Marshal Rescinds Restrictions for Unincorporated Areas Following Improved Weather Conditions
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC – The Brunswick County Fire Marshal’s Office has officially lifted the ban on all open burning within 100 feet of an occupied structure for unincorporated areas, effective at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026.
The local burn ban was originally implemented on March 28, 2026, as a precautionary measure due to unfavorable weather forecasts. While the ban is now lifted, Fire Marshal Andrew Thompson urges the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution during any outdoor burning activities to protect lives and property.
Residents must continue to adhere to state and local regulations regarding open burning:
-
Allowed Materials: Only natural vegetation, including leaves, tree trimmings, or yard debris can be legally burned within 100 feet of an occupied structure.
-
Permit Requirements: Any outdoor burning located more than 100 feet from a structure requires a permit from the North Carolina Forest Service.
-
Notification Protocol: Permit holders are encouraged to notify the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center at 910.253.2505 before they begin burning.
The Brunswick County Fire Marshal’s Office continuously monitors fire weather metrics to assess risks. It is important to note that county-level burn bans do not apply to permits issued by the North Carolina Forest Service or the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
