Governor orders U.S. and N.C. flags to half‑staff from sunrise to sunset Monday, May 4.

Regional News — Governor Josh Stein has ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half‑staff from sunrise to sunset today, Monday, May 4, in honor of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day.

The observance is held each year under Public Law 107‑51, which directs flags to be lowered nationwide in recognition of firefighters who have died in the line of duty. State officials noted that because the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day fell on Sunday, May 3, this year, the flag‑lowering will be observed on the following Monday.

In a statement, Governor Stein said the day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by firefighters across North Carolina.

“Today we remember the North Carolina firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice for others. May their memories be a blessing, and may we honor their heroic work by celebrating their courage and dedication to keeping their neighbors safe.”

Residents, businesses, and local governments are encouraged to join the statewide tribute by lowering flags where possible.
