Town reminds visitors and locals why lower speed limits protect a growing, walkable community
Sunset Beach, NC — From March 30 through April 5, 2026, the Sunset Beach Police Department will participate in the statewide “Speed a Little, Lose a Lot” campaign, stepping up enforcement and reminding drivers why the town’s posted limits are intentionally set lower than in many surrounding areas.
Sunset Beach’s roadways serve a unique blend of year‑round residents, seasonal visitors, cyclists, pedestrians, and golf carts. As traffic increases especially during spring and summer, the town’s narrow streets, crosswalks, and residential corridors become significantly more active. Lower speed limits are designed to give drivers more time to react in areas where people frequently step into or near the roadway, where vehicles make sudden turns toward beach access points, and where visitors may be unfamiliar with local traffic patterns.
Police officials note that speeding reduces a driver’s ability to negotiate curves, avoid obstacles, or stop quickly when conditions change. It also makes it harder for pedestrians and other drivers to accurately judge a vehicle’s distance and speed, a key factor in preventing collisions.
Whether you’re here for a week or you call Sunset Beach home, officers are asking everyone to slow down, follow posted limits, and help keep the community safe and walkable for all.
