U.S. Army Special Forces exercise activates March 27–April 9 across the region

By BC News Staff Writer

WHITEVILLE / BOLIVIA, NC — The fictional Republic of Pineland will once again activate as the U.S. Army conducts Robin Sage, the culminating field exercise for Special Forces candidates, from March 27 through April 9 in Brunswick and Columbus counties.

Army officials confirm the unconventional‑warfare scenario will unfold across rural communities, forests, waterways, and private lands throughout the region.

What Residents Should Expect — The soldiers participating are students, not yet Green Berets. They may be seen in standard camouflage or in civilian “guerrilla” attire as they work to complete their final certification in unconventional warfare.

High‑Activity Zones
Columbus County: Green Swamp, Lake Waccamaw timberlands, and the rural outskirts of Tabor City and Fair Bluff
Brunswick County: Town Creek, Northwest, and Supply corridors, including water‑based operations along the Cape Fear River

Resident FAQ
– Is it dangerous?
No. All weapons used in the exercise fire blank ammunition and feature orange safety tips. No live rounds are used in public training areas.

– How do I identify participants?
Any participant in civilian clothing will wear a brown armband. Training vehicles will display circular placards or stickers.

– Will there be aircraft?
Yes. Residents may see low‑flying MH‑47 Chinooks and MH‑60 Black Hawks, particularly during nighttime operations.

– Who oversees the exercise?
Robin Sage is directed by the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Liberty and is fully coordinated with the Brunswick and Columbus Counties Sheriff’s Offices.

Southeastern North Carolina’s Remote, Rural, and Rugged terrain continues to make the region one of the premier training grounds for the next generation of U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers.
