The North Carolina Department of Transportation began brining interstates, major routes, and bridges on Friday as the state braces for a surge of frigid temperatures. Crews are treating roadways across North Carolina, including key corridors in Brunswick and Columbus counties.
Brine – a mixture of water and 23% salt – is applied in dry conditions when temperatures are above 18 degrees. NCDOT typically decides to pretreat roads 24 to 48 hours before a winter event to help prevent ice from bonding to pavement. Drivers are urged to slow down and give crews plenty of space as they work.
Local meteorologists say the incoming cold air could bring a chance of snow and the potential for black ice on some area roads Sunday. Black ice forms as a thin, transparent glaze, making it difficult for drivers to see and increasing the risk of sudden loss of traction.
