Harold Claude Helms, age 87, of Bladenboro, NC, passed away peacefully at the Lower Cape Fear Angel House in Whiteville. Harold was born on March 24, 1938, to the late Isaac Claude Helms and Ida Bell Pait Helms. In addition to his parents, Harold is preceded in death by a sister; Pauline Vannoy and a brother; Charles Helms.
Harold served his country honorably by enlisting in the United States Army and then serving in the National Guard for 6 years. He worked in maintenance engineering with Columbus Regional Hospital for 31 years and maintaining lawns at his church in Whiteville: New Life and at his home. Another one of his favorite pastimes was fishing.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years; Geraldine Helms of the home, Ricky Helms (Crystal) of Shallotte, Billy Helms (Yvette) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Grandchildren; Penny McDaniels (David) of Whiteville, and Brittany Daniels of Nakina, Great Grandchildren: Starlee McDaniels of Whiteville and Alina Daniels of Nakina, and Gracie Lori Milligan of Whiteville, one brother; Dewey Helms (Carolyn) of Morganton, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 2:00 pm in the chapel of McKenzie Mortuary with Rev. Willard McPherson, Rev. David Kelly and Rev. Charles Cribb officiating. Internment with Military Honors will follow at Clarkton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 1:45 pm at McKenzie Mortuary prior to the service.
