A Chadbourn man has been charged with felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired in connection with a deadly rear‑end collision on U.S. 74 in late January.
Jordan Alexander Kelly, 21, of 201 Broadway Road, was taken into custody Feb. 12 and is being held under no bond while awaiting trial. Jail records list multiple charges, including felony death by vehicle, misdemeanor death by vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving, speeding, failure to reduce speed, and seat belt violations.
The charges stem from a Jan. 25 crash near the Union Valley Road area, where investigators say Kelly was traveling westbound at more than 70 miles per hour when he allegedly slammed into the back of a Ford driven by 19‑year‑old Zachary Snowten of Evergreen. The collision occurred around 1:30 a.m., according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged. Snowten died at the scene.
Warrants show Kelly was initially charged on Jan. 27 with misdemeanor death by vehicle. That charge was upgraded to a felony on Feb. 11 following further investigation.
Kelly remains in custody pending court proceedings.
