WHITEVILLE, N.C. — A homicide investigation is underway after a local fitness center owner was fatally injured inside her business early Wednesday morning, prompting an intensive search for evidence and a call for community assistance.

Police responded to Stronger Body Fitness on North Thompson Street shortly after dawn on March 11, where they found the owner, Cynthia Hansen, suffering from severe injuries consistent with an assault. Officers rendered aid before she was transported to Columbus Regional Healthcare System, where she later died.

Authorities have not released details about the nature of the attack, but the case was quickly reclassified as a homicide. The State Bureau of Investigation joined Whiteville detectives at the scene, and agents were later seen canvassing nearby streets and wooded areas for potential evidence.

Sections of North Thompson Street, East Smith Street, and surrounding blocks were temporarily closed as investigators searched the area. Officers also expanded their efforts into nearby neighborhoods, including McKenzie Woods, as they worked to trace movements in and out of the corridor during the early morning hours.

The Whiteville Police Department has issued a public request for home, business, and doorbell camera footage recorded between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on March 11, particularly from:

  • North Thompson Street
  • East Smith Street
  • East Wyche Street
  • East Church Street
  • East College Street
  • North Franklin Street
  • McKenzie Woods neighborhood

Investigators say they are looking for any unusual activity, vehicles, or individuals that may help reconstruct the timeline leading up to the assault.

Police have not announced any suspects or arrests, and no motive has been released. The investigation remains active.
