Tree Clearing and Heavy Smoke Stir Concern in Quiet Sunset Harbor

Clear Cutting, pile of burning Pine - Sunset Harbor Road

A once‑modest fishing community faces another visible shift as clear‑cutting expands along Sunset Harbor Road.

The unincorporated harbor – once a modest fishing community of cottages tucked along the Intracoastal Waterway – is now watching a familiar landscape disappear. What was long a quiet corridor of pines and live oaks, now is giving way to fresh clear‑cutting on a privately owned tract north of River Run Plantation and directly across from Seawatch at Sunset Harbor.

The work has involved the clear‑cutting of a large stand of pines, with pockets of mature live oaks also removed as equipment moved deeper into the property. Residents have taken quick notice of the sudden gaps in the tree canopy, where dense woods once formed a continuous backdrop along Sunset Harbor Road into the harbor town. In a neighborhood where development typically moves slowly, the appearance of heavy machinery and exposed soil stands out immediately.

The wooded corridor has long supported foxes, coyotes, and other wildlife that move quietly through the brush and shaded understory. As the tree cover disappears, locals may see more animal movement along Sunset Harbor Road as habitat shifts and natural cover is reduced.

Crews have been clear‑cutting the trees and burning large piles of debris on‑site, sending a heavier, more acrid smoke across the area – not the pleasant scent of a campfire, but the sharper odor of freshly cut timber being disposed of in bulk. For a community accustomed to calm mornings, golf carts on quiet roads, and uninterrupted views of the ICW, the change is hard to miss.

For many longtime residents, the clearing here is just one small piece of a much larger picture, as Brunswick County continues to experience rapid, widespread development that is reshaping long‑established communities across the region.
The loss of tree cover has altered a stretch of Sunset Harbor that has looked the same for decades. With the land cleared and the future of the site dotted with new townhomes, harbor residents are paying close attention to how quickly the area is changing.
