Frances Mial “Mikie” Wall, age 80, passed away at her home at Lake Waccamaw, NC on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. A beloved friend, neighbor, and family member, Mikie will be missed deeply.
Mikie was born in Huntsville, AL, but her roots were pure North Carolina. She spent her early childhood in Wilmington, NC, and went to high school in Whiteville, NC where she made lifelong friends. She attended East Carolina College in Greenville before completing her degree at UNC-Chapel Hill. She was in the first class of female journalism majors and was honored as the outstanding senior woman journalist.
Mikie spent her entire career in the tourism industry. For more than 20 years she ran the family business, The Moore Tours, as a tour operator with her aunt Fannie Wall Moore. Mikie, Fannie, and other family members traveled across the U.S, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
Mikie was elected president of the National Tour Association (1986) and served for many years on their executive board. In 2011 she received the Bob Everidge Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Tour Association.
She spent seven years as tourism sales manager for the Charlotte Convention and Visitors Bureau. In 1996 she started working in Raleigh at the North Carolina Division of Tourism as Director of Sales and Trade Development. During this time, she was voted one of 200 most powerful women in travel and received the Bill Sharpe Award from the North Carolina Travel Council.
After eleven years with the state, she moved to Wilmington, NC to work as Vice President of Sales and Services at the Wilmington and Beaches Convention Visitors Bureau.
After retiring, Mikie embraced volunteer activities. She was a loyal member and one-time president of the Lake Waccamaw Woman’s Club. She was an active member of multiple book clubs and bible study groups. Mikie’s high school classmates met regularly for reunions. Her favorite day of the month was every 3rd Saturday at the Museum Depot’s Music Jam where she had a special front row seat.
She is survived by her sister Nancy Ellen Wall Stephens of Huntsville, AL, her niece Mary Catherine Stephens of Arlington, VA, her niece Rachel Ellen Heavers (Ian Heavers) of Baltimore, MD, grandniece Ellen Fairley Heavers and grandnephew Robert Mial Heavers. She is predeceased by her mother, Mary Ethel Davis Wall and her father, Stephen Wall.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 11:00 am at Whiteville United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 pm in Lilesville, NC at Forestville United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 10:45 am prior to the service.
