Hazel Branch Road location under review as Brunswick County’s postal network faces mounting demand.

Leland, NC — A new U.S. Postal Service facility may be on the horizon for northern Brunswick County, with a proposed site along Hazel Branch Road now under review by local planning officials. While the project has not been formally approved by USPS, the submission marks the first tangible step toward expanding postal capacity in the fast‑growing Leland area.

Town staff confirmed that a site plan was submitted for a USPS‑related facility on a cleared parcel between Sloan Road and White Bridge Lane. Officials have not yet clarified whether the proposal represents a full post office or a carrier annex.

The move follows years of strain across Brunswick County’s postal network. Residents in Leland, Winnabow, Bolivia, Supply, Southport, Ash, Longwood, and Ocean Isle Beach have reported delayed deliveries and overcrowded offices. Some locations have resorted to temporary tents for sorting and overflow operations, and USPS has relied on an annex in Wilmington to handle excess mail volume.

Despite the new site plan, USPS representatives previously told Leland officials that new construction remains “on hold indefinitely.” The agency has not issued a public statement confirming or denying the Hazel Branch Road proposal.

Local leaders say additional postal capacity is critical to meet the county’s growth, but final approval will depend on USPS’s federal infrastructure review process. For now, the Hazel Branch Road submission stands as a sign of progress – not a guarantee.
