Owners, Staff Report Quiet-Hour Activity at Supply Bar with a Long, Unrecorded Past

Charlie Brown’s Tavern has operated under several names for decades. Today, owners say unexplained activity continues inside the building.

Supply, NC — Charlie Brown’s Tavern, located at 2511 Seashore Road SW in Supply, has been under its current ownership for eight years, but the building’s history stretches back much further. Locals say the site has been a bar for more than half a century, once known as “The Gator” and later “The Office.” Some locals say their kin had memories of a small gas station/fish market on that property in the pre-1950s or so. Much of that history was never formally recorded, leaving only community memory to fill in the gaps.

In recent years, owners and former employees say they’ve experienced unusual activity during quiet hours – footsteps after closing, doors opening on their own, and the sense of someone’s presence with them in an empty room. Former staff described the building as feeling “busy” even when no one else was inside.

Co-owner Bruce Mabey contacted Wilmington-based paranormal researcher Sean Austin to look into the reports. Austin, known for his appearances on the Travel Channel and Netflix’s “28 Days Haunted,” conducted a walkthrough of the tavern and said he heard “disembodied” voices. He told the owners he sensed the presence of a man wearing a cowboy hat and also a young child. “The spiritual presence is playful, not demonic nor harmful,” Austin said.

Austin also noted accounts of glasses sliding off the bar, a broom moving from the kitchen with no one present, giggling, childlike sounds, and belongings shifting on the bar by themselves. He said he was told of “reported tragedies where people lost their lives both outside the business and inside,” Because he did not view the activity as dangerous, there was no recommendation to attempt to remove or “banish” the presence.

Despite the stories, the tavern continues to operate as a neighborhood bar much as it has for generations. Whether the activity is tied to the building’s long, largely unrecorded past or simply part of the lore that gathers in places like this.
