Alligator Safely Back to Water After Afternoon 911 Call

Officers guide displaced gator from parking lot to nearby retention pond

Southport, NC — Southport Police Department officers responded Sunday afternoon to a 9-1-1 report of a large alligator roaming through the parking lot of a local well‑care facility. Upon arrival, officers found the alligator moving along the fence line while attempting to return to a nearby retention pond.

Officers partially opened the fence to create a safe exit path, allowing the alligator to leave the property and reenter the water without incident. The call concluded calmly, with no injuries and a positive outcome for both the public and the animal.

SPD leadership noted that this response highlights the broad range of duties officers take on each day from enforcement to community assistance and wildlife safety. The department’s recently trained Alligator Control Agents were among those on scene. Sgt. Mahoney, Sgt. Wade, and APS Officer Ward completed the NC Wildlife Alligator Control Agent (ACA) Workshop just last week, certifying them to safely handle and trap alligators when needed.

Chief Coring commended the team for their professionalism and teamwork during the call.
