Deputy Devin Mason remembered for service and sacrifice after being killed in the line of duty in 2025

South Carolina — Darlington County Deputy Sheriff Devin Mason was formally inducted into the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame on May 6, 2026, honoring his service and sacrifice.

Mason, born January 31, 1997, in Whiteville NC and was a 2017 graduate of West Columbus High School, where he played tennis and football. He joined the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office in 2024 and completed the SC Criminal Justice Academy’s Basic Class #828 in March 2025. He was engaged to Madi Palmer Church and welcomed a son, Brooks James Mason, in April 2025.

Deputy Mason was killed in the line of duty on July 1, 2025, after responding with fellow deputies to a residence on Old Timers Court in Lamar, SC while searching for two wanted individuals. After the female suspect was arrested outside, Mason and Corporal Heatherly entered the home to continue the search. They were ambushed by the male suspect hiding in a bathroom. Corporal Heatherly was struck in his body armor, and Mason was mortally wounded. Deputies returned fire, and the suspect died at the scene.

Deputy Lynch and Corporal Heatherly carried Mason outside and rendered aid until EMS arrived. Mason was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Darlington County Sheriff Deputy Frank Devin Mason is now permanently honored in SC’s Hall of Fame and remembered for his dedication to law enforcement and his community.
