RALEIGH — With the Atlantic hurricane season set to begin June 1, Governor Josh Stein is urging North Carolinians to take steps now to prepare for storms, emphasizing lessons learned from the devastation of Hurricane Helene.
The Governor’s message comes during Hurricane Preparedness Week, observed May 3–9, and highlights the importance of early planning for families, businesses, and communities across the state.
“Hurricane Helene was a stark reminder of how destructive tropical systems can be,” Stein said. “Preparing in advance not only helps you stay safe during a storm but also speeds up recovery.”
State officials are encouraging residents to begin with a written emergency plan that outlines communication methods, evacuation routes, and a designated family meeting place. North Carolina Emergency Management Director Will Ray stressed that families should practice their plans and remember to include pets and vulnerable neighbors.
Emergency managers recommend that households plan to stay with family, friends, or in hotels outside the impact zone if evacuations are ordered. Public shelters should be considered a last resort.
Residents are also urged to secure important documents — including identification, insurance policies, medical records, and financial information — in a safe, accessible location. Officials note that flood insurance is not included in most standard homeowners policies, making now the time to review coverage.
A well‑stocked emergency kit should sustain a household for three to seven days and include non‑perishable food, water, medications, a weather radio, first‑aid supplies, clothing, blankets, hygiene items, cash, and pet necessities. Face masks, hand sanitizer, and copies of vital documents are also recommended.
Homeowners can reduce storm damage by trimming trees, clearing gutters, securing outdoor items, and covering windows before a storm arrives.
Officials emphasize staying informed through local media and keeping a battery‑powered radio on hand in case of power outages. If evacuation orders are issued, residents should follow them immediately.
