RALEIGH — Governor Josh Stein is marking Teacher Appreciation Week by thanking North Carolina’s educators and underscoring his administration’s push to raise teacher pay, strengthen public schools, and improve student support statewide.
In a statement recognizing the state’s 1.5 million public school students and the teachers who serve them, Stein said he has met “inspiring and enthusiastic teachers who go above and beyond to shape our next generation.” He added that the state has “a responsibility to show up” for educators through stronger pay and better working conditions.
Earlier this month, the Governor released his recommended 2026–2027 state budget, which includes several major education proposals:
- Raising starting teacher pay to the highest level in the Southeast
- Significant raises for all teachers
- Restoring master’s pay for veteran educators
- Expanding programs such as the Science of Reading initiative and Advanced Teaching Roles
- $300 tax‑deductible supply stipend to offset teachers’ out‑of‑pocket classroom expenses
The budget also includes school safety investments, including upgraded cameras, door locks, fencing, and detection equipment, along with a pilot program for behavioral threat assessment.
To address student well‑being and reduce chronic absences and disciplinary issues, the proposal adds funding for more school nurses, counselors, social workers, and psychologists.
Teacher Appreciation Week is observed nationwide to honor educators’ contributions to student learning and community life. Stein released a video message as part of the week’s recognition.
