Routine infrastructure inspection aims to identify sewer system vulnerabilities and ensure environmental safety for local residents.
Lake Waccamaw, NC — The Town of Lake Waccamaw will conduct routine smoke testing on Tuesday, May 5, to ensure the continued integrity and efficiency of the municipal sewer system. This essential maintenance procedure allows crews to identify potential leaks, cracks, or unauthorized connections within the wastewater infrastructure. Testing operations will be concentrated along the 1106–1210 block of East Old Highway 74/76, as well as throughout the neighborhoods surrounding James Avenue and Bingham Lane.
Residents in these specific areas should anticipate seeing specialized smoke rising from street manholes and residential roof vents as crews move through the district.
This substance is a non-toxic, non-staining vapor designed specifically for infrastructure testing; it is completely harmless to residents, pets, and indoor plants. While the appearance of smoke may seem unusual, it is a standard indicator that the system is being pressurized for inspection and does not represent a fire hazard.
To ensure the smoke remains outside the home, residents are encouraged to pour a small amount of water into any infrequently used drains or floor sinks to ensure the plumbing traps are sealed.
In the event that smoke does enter a building, it typically indicates a dry drain trap or a fault in the home’s private plumbing system. Should this occur, residents should simply open windows for ventilation and notify the utility crews working nearby or contact local town officials directly for assistance. The Town of Lake Waccamaw appreciates the community’s cooperation as these necessary improvements are made to our local infrastructure.
