Local Health Organizations Promote Sun Safety and Early Detection in Whiteville
By BC News Staff Writer
Whiteville NC — Melanoma Monday held annually on the first Monday of May, this day kicks off Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
To mark the occasion, representatives from the Donayre Cancer Care Center and Columbus Regional Healthcare System were active in downtown Whiteville earlier today. Teammates distributed free sunscreen, SPF lip balm, and sun hats to people around the Courthouse to highlight the importance of sun safety and the necessity of annual skin checks.

Why Awareness Matters – Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, but it is also highly treatable when caught early. Community outreach events like this one are vital for educating the public on prevention and early detection.
Sun Safety Essentials:
-
Broad-Spectrum Protection: Always use sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
-
Wearable Coverage: Hats and SPF-rated lip balm provide essential barriers against direct exposure.
-
The ABCDEs: Regularly monitor moles for Asymmetry, irregular Borders, changes in Color, Diameter, and Evolving traits.
For those who were unable to attend today’s event, local health officials encourage scheduling a professional skin screening and practicing consistent sun protection as we head into the summer months.
