County officials urge continued caution and compliance with state notification laws as dry spring conditions persist.

CONWAY, SC — Effective Monday, May 4, 2026, Horry County Government has officially lifted the outdoor burn ban for all unincorporated areas of the county. The decision comes after a period of heightened fire risk, though officials warn that residents must remain vigilant despite the change in status.

While the lifting of the ban restores the ability to clear yard debris through burning, Horry County Fire Rescue emphasizes that all open burning must still follow strict local and state regulations.

Residents are reminded that under South Carolina law, a burn ban reversal does not waive the requirement for notification. Before any outdoor burning begins, individuals must contact the South Carolina Forestry Commission at 800.986.5404.

Notification is required for every individual burn event to ensure local fire towers and emergency dispatchers are aware of smoke plumes in the area.

County officials are asking residents to exercise “due diligence” when managing open flames. Even in the absence of a formal ban, coastal weather conditions can shift rapidly, creating dangerous wildfire environments. Safety recommendations include monitoring wind speeds, never leaving a fire unattended, and ensuring a safe distance from structures and woodlands.

For detailed information on what materials are permitted for open burning or to review the full Horry County ordinance, residents can visit the Horry County Fire Rescue website at horrycountysc.gov/departments/fire-rescue/open-burning/
