RECALL: Rabies Vaccines – Sterile Water found in Vials

Boehringer Ingelheim issues nationwide alert; NC pet owners urged to verify vaccination records

Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of a single lot of its IMRAB® 3TF (1 mL) rabies vaccine after discovering that some vials contained sterile water instead of the active rabies vaccine.

The recall, announced, affects Serial Number 18665, which carries an expiration date of March 12, 2027. According to the manufacturer, the impacted lot represents approximately 2.5 percent of all IMRAB doses sold annually in the United States.

The affected vaccine was shipped to veterinary clinics between September 29, 2025, and January 8, 2026. While the sterile water poses no health risk to animals, pets vaccinated with this lot did not receive rabies protection, leaving them vulnerable to the virus and potentially out of compliance with state and local rabies laws.

Boehringer Ingelheim has notified all veterinarians who received the affected serial, and clinics are in the process of contacting clients whose pets may require revaccination.

Pet owners in North Carolina are included in the nationwide recall and are encouraged to check their rabies vaccination certificates for Serial Number 18665. Any dog, cat, or ferret vaccinated after September 29, 2025, may be affected if this lot was used. State and local health officials consider animals vaccinated with this serial to be unprotected until they receive a valid replacement dose.

Owners who identify the recalled serial on their records should contact their veterinarian promptly to arrange revaccination and ensure their pet’s legal status and immunity are restored.
