Marion County, South Carolina — Crews monitoring 200‑acre fire; smoke expected to linger through the week
A visible column of smoke rising from Marion County is the result of a contained wildfire of approximately 200 acres.
The fire is burning just across the Little Pee Dee River, directly opposite Horry County’s Punch Bowl Landing
While the smoke is currently lifting upward, atmospheric conditions are expected to shift throughout the week, especially during the morning hours, causing smoke to settle closer to the ground across much of Horry County.
Residents are encouraged to call Horry County 911 only when flames are visible.
The widespread haze and smoke odor reported across the county today are likely tied to the Marion County wildfire, which officials continue to monitor closely.
Horry County 9-1-1 processed dozens of smoke‑investigations calls this morning, sending Horry County Fire Rescue crews to check reports that were, in nearly all cases, connected to this same wildfire. Officials appreciate the community’s patience as smoke impacts are expected to continue through the week.
A burn ban remains in effect for the unincorporated areas of Horry County
