BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC — City officials have scheduled a public hearing to discuss proposed changes to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) aimed at protecting one of the region’s most famous natural residents: the Venus flytrap.
The City of Boiling Spring Lakes will hold a legislative hearing on May 12, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, located at 9 East Boiling Spring Road, to discuss proposed text amendments to Article 7, Appendix A, and Appendix B of the Unified Development Ordinance regarding the conservation of Venus flytrap populations.
The primary purpose of this hearing is to consider updates to the city’s development standards that would directly support the protection of the Venus flytrap. This rare carnivorous plant thrives in the specific “wet pine flatwood” soil conditions unique to the Boiling Spring Lakes area.
By amending Article 7 and the Appendices, the city aims to ensure that as new construction projects move forward, these sensitive botanical sites are identified and preserved.
The Board of Commissioners encourages all residents to attend and share their input. Following the public comment period, the Board may modify the proposal based on community feedback or move to officially adopt the amendments. Interested parties can review the full text of the proposed changes before the hearing by visiting the City Hall lobby on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or by accessing the documents here.
