A shelter dog’s journey from waiting for adoption to preparing for lifesaving work

Horry County, SC — Not every hero begins their story with a badge or a uniform. Some begin behind a kennel door, waiting for someone to see their potential.
Nala was one of those dogs. She lived at the Horry County Animal Care Center, another hopeful face among many, watching people walk past her run day after day. What no one could have known then was that the quiet dog in kennel housing had the instincts, drive and determination to become something extraordinary.
Today, Nala is in active training with Horry County Search and Rescue, a nonprofit team that assists public‑safety agencies across the region. She is working toward certification as an IPWDA Search and Rescue Trailing K9, a designation earned only through rigorous training, discipline and proven reliability in the field. Each trail, each command and each scenario brings her closer to becoming a certified resource for the Horry County community.
