James Peter Hilton

James Peter Hilton, fondly known as James, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 91, after a courageous battle with dementia. Born on November 1, 1934, in Swainsboro, GA, James lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love.

James served his country faithfully during World War II as a member of the United States Army. His commitment to service extended into his civilian life, where he embarked on a career with the HESS Corporation, a tenure from which he eventually retired. Not one to remain idle, James continued to enrich his life and the lives of those around him by obtaining a certificate and working as a Nursing Assistant.

A man of varied interests, James had a profound love for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Whether casting a line or enjoying the serenity of the waters, these moments brought him great joy. When not in his fishing attire, James was known for his sharp sense of style, always dressed to the nines with a cherished collection of hats. He also loved to bake specialty cakes and was very talented on the piano.

His faith was an integral part of his life, and he was a devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, contributing to his community and serving his faith with unwavering commitment.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Carlos and Irene Body Hilton, and siblings Willie Joe Hilton, Hubert Hilton, Jerome Hilton, Edward Hilton, Sarah H. Bender, and Helen H. Thompson.

He is survived by his loving sisters Louella H. Long and Carrie H. Williams, and a special niece, Barbara Long. Sister-in-laws Sondra Hilton and Ria Hilton, along with a host of nieces and nephews, also mourn his passing.

Honoring his legacy and service, James’s cremains will be interred at the National Veteran Cemetery Finn’s Point, NJ, with details of the service to be announced at a later date.

His family and friends will forever cherish the memories of a man whose life exemplified loyalty, kindness, and grace.
