WHITEVILLE — Columbus County is set to receive more than $70,000 in state aviation funding to support improvements at the Columbus County Municipal Airport, pending approval by commissioners at Monday night’s meeting.
County Manager Eddie Madden is requesting authorization for the county to accept a State Aid to Airports Block Grant Agreement from the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation. The grant totals $70,693 and requires a 5% local match of $3,720.70, which would be paid from the county’s Transportation Reserve Direct Funding (TRDF) allocation.
The funding will be used for airport‑related capital needs, though specific project details will be finalized once the agreement is approved. Block grants from NCDOT are commonly used for runway maintenance, lighting upgrades, safety improvements, and planning work at general‑aviation airports.
The item appears under the Action Items section of Monday’s agenda, signaling that commissioners will vote on the agreement during the regular 6:30 p.m. session.
The Columbus County Municipal Airport serves general aviation traffic, business flights, agricultural operations, and emergency services. County officials have emphasized in recent years that maintaining the airport’s infrastructure is essential for economic development and regional connectivity.
If approved, the grant agreement and project ordinance will be executed immediately, allowing work to begin once NCDOT releases the funds.
