BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC — City officials will take public comment tonight on a proposed 12‑month moratorium that would temporarily halt new applications for data centers, data‑processing facilities, and cryptocurrency mining operations. The hearing begins at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 9 E. Boiling Spring Road.
The proposal comes as the city evaluates how large‑scale data‑processing uses could affect infrastructure, noise, energy demand, and surrounding neighborhoods. Boiling Spring Lakes’ current development ordinance does not define or regulate data centers or crypto‑mining operations, prompting staff to recommend a temporary pause while new standards are drafted.
City leaders emphasized that Boiling Spring Lakes has not received any applications for data‑center or crypto‑mining projects. The moratorium is described as a preventive measure, mirroring steps taken by other North Carolina communities responding to rapid growth in AI‑driven and high‑energy industrial uses.
If adopted, the moratorium would remain in effect until June 2, 2027, unless the city completes and adopts updated zoning regulations sooner. Residents will have the opportunity to speak before commissioner’s vote.
BC News will provide updates following tonight’s meeting.
