As the coastal Carolinas face a staggering rainfall deficit, local fire officials are urging residents to take immediate action to protect their homes and property.
According to the latest N.C. Drought Monitor, the situation has reached a critical level, with Columbus County currently split between Moderate (D1) and Severe (D2) drought, while Brunswick County continues to experience dangerously dry conditions.
With a rainfall deficit exceeding 18 inches and no significant rain in the immediate 10-day forecast, the risk of wildfire is at its highest point in years. Local authorities have already taken steps to mitigate the danger:
- Burn Bans in Effect: As of Saturday, March 28, a strict burn ban remains in effect for all unincorporated areas of Brunswick County.
- Statewide Restrictions: The N.C. Forest Service has canceled all burning permits and suspended the issuance of new permits until further notice.
- Declining Water Levels: Surface water in local ponds, swamps, and rivers is hitting record lows. The lack of traditional “winter recharge” for the soil means the region is entering the spring season under extreme stress.
How to Protect Your Property
In these conditions, small embers can travel long distances and ignite dry vegetation or debris instantly. Creating a “defensible space” is your best line of defense:
- Clear the Gutters: Remove dry leaves, pine needles, and twigs from rooflines and gutters where embers often land.
- Create a Buffer Zone: Remove flammable debris, such as dry brush and mulch, from the immediate perimeter of your home.
- Prepare a Go-Bag: Ensure your family has an evacuation plan and an emergency bag ready with medications, documents, and supplies.
Being proactive not only helps protect your home but also gives firefighters a better chance to defend your property should a fire break out nearby.
