Former quarry in Northwest community positioned for long‑term raw‑water reservoir
By BC News Staff Writer
Northwest, NC — Brunswick County’s long‑term water‑supply strategy includes a major land purchase in the Northwest community: a 380‑acre former quarry site located near the Northwest Water Treatment Plant off Mt. Misery Road. County officials confirmed the property was acquired to support development of a future raw‑water reservoir, a project intended to strengthen regional water reliability for decades to come.
The site, which includes a 50–60 acre lake formed from past quarry operations, sits just west of the treatment plant and within the same road network that includes Mt. Misery Road and Blue Loop Road. While not directly on Blue Loop, the quarry is part of the surrounding area that feeds into the county’s raw‑water infrastructure corridor.
Brunswick County documents show the land was purchased for $8.7 million, including funds set aside to maintain the property’s wooded buffer. Officials say the reservoir would serve as a backup water source during drought, contamination events, or interruptions to the Kings Bluff raw‑water transmission system, the main line supplying much of the county.
The Mt. Misery Road corridor has already seen raw‑water main installation and related construction in recent years, signaling the county’s broader push to expand capacity and secure long‑term supply. The quarry site is expected to remain largely undeveloped until reservoir planning advances, but its strategic location near existing treatment facilities makes it a key component of Brunswick County’s future water‑supply network.
