Beloved tracking dog closes his service with one final successful track
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit has long been one of the agency’s most respected and relied upon divisions — a team built on rigorous training, specialized skills, and an unwavering commitment to public safety. For decades, BCSO K9s have assisted in locating missing persons, tracking fleeing suspects, detecting narcotics, and supporting deputies during high‑risk operations. Each dog‑and‑handler team forms a bond strengthened by countless hours of training and real‑world deployments, becoming an essential part of the county’s law‑enforcement history.
Among those trusted partners is K9 Oti, who has now officially retired after years of loyal service. True to form, he ended his career the same way he lived it — working hard, staying focused, and protecting his community.
Oti’s final call came at a wreck scene on Brick Landing Road. Deputies collected scent using the absorption method, applying a gauze pad to the vehicle’s gear shifter and retrieving a shoe from the driver’s floorboard. Once deployed at the front of the vehicle, Oti immediately locked onto the scent. His track carried him behind two homes, over heavy brush piles, and through deep mud — terrain that never slowed him down throughout his career.
The trail led to a nearby church parking lot, where Oti’s pull intensified. Moments later, the suspect stepped out from around a corner. Commands were given, the suspect complied, and deputies made a safe arrest. As always, Oti remained at Sgt. J. Smith’s side until the situation was fully secured. It was a final track that perfectly captured who Oti has always been focused, fearless, and faithful.
As the BCSO K9 Unit continues its mission with new generations of working dogs, Oti’s legacy becomes part of the unit’s story. A reminder of the countless miles tracked, the lives protected, and the quiet, steadfast service these dogs provide every day. Thank you, Oti, for every shift, every search, and every moment of loyalty to Brunswick County. May retirement brings you soft beds, endless treats, and the spoiled‑rotten life you’ve more than earned. Good boy.
