District removes fraudulent “Opportunities Designed for Students” message; families urged to monitor accounts if information was submitted
Brunswick County, NC — Brunswick County Schools is alerting families to a phishing scam that was recently delivered to student email accounts.
According to the district, the fraudulent message carried the subject line “Brunswick County Schools Opportunities Designed for Students” and falsely claimed to offer flexible summer work paying $300 per week. Officials emphasize that the email did not come from Brunswick County Schools or its Human Resources Department.
The scam message included an “Apply Now” link directing students to a Google Form titled “Flexible Work-from-Home Opportunities for Students.” Families are urged not to open the link or submit any information.
District staff removed the phishing email from all student accounts once it was identified. However, Brunswick County Schools advises families to take precautions if a student opened the form or submitted personal details — including name, address, phone number, email, age, or financial institution. In those cases, families should treat the information as potentially compromised, contact their financial institution, and monitor accounts closely.
Students are encouraged to report suspicious messages using Gmail’s “Report phishing” feature.
The district notes that online scams targeting young people are becoming increasingly sophisticated and reminds families to talk with students about being cautious when opening emails that offer money, jobs, prizes, or other financial incentives.
