Nonprofit continues vital rescue and rehabilitation work across Brunswick County
By BC News Staff Writer
Oak Island, NC — Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter has served as one of Brunswick County’s most important wildlife rehabilitation resources since its founding in 2007. The nonprofit specializes in rescuing, treating, and releasing injured, sick, and orphaned wild birds from across the county and surrounding coastal areas.
Operated by founder Mary Ellen Rogers, the shelter provides medical care, safe housing, and species‑appropriate diets while preparing birds for release back into their natural habitats.
The organization also offers public education on wildlife safety and coastal stewardship, with a focus on preventing injuries caused by fishing gear, vehicle strikes, storms, and habitat disturbance.
The shelter’s work includes caring for pelicans, seabirds, raptors, and other coastal species, including those considered threatened or endangered. Staff and trained volunteers avoid extreme or non‑viable medical interventions, prioritizing quality of life and long‑term survival. Sea Biscuit is not a walk‑in facility, as patient care requires controlled access, but the shelter maintains emergency contact lines for reporting distressed wildlife.
The public can support Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter by donating essential supplies, contributing funds for medical care or volunteering with daily tasks, transport, or administrative help.
Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter continues to play a critical role in protecting Brunswick County’s coastal bird populations, relying on community involvement to sustain its mission of rescue, rehabilitation, and release.
