Outpatient expansion in Leland and a proposed 20‑bed western facility reflect rising regional demand
By BC News Staff Writer
COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC — Columbus Regional Healthcare System has been the center of medical care in Columbus County for more than a century. Growing from a small community hospital into a regional provider offering modern outpatient services, specialty care, and advanced surgical options.
Its long‑term shift toward outpatient care, which began in the 1980s, helped stabilize the system and positioned it for continued growth.
Today, the system is expanding again to meet rising demand along the U.S. 17 and U.S. 74 corridors. One major project is Advanced Care Leland, a two‑story outpatient center now under construction in Brunswick Forest. The facility will offer primary care, imaging, specialty clinics, and an ambulatory surgery center, serving the rapidly growing Brunswick County population. It is strictly an outpatient project and does not include hospital beds.
Separate from the Leland development, Columbus Regional has proposed a western expansion that includes creating a new 20‑bed inpatient facility. This proposal, submitted through the state’s Certificate of Need process, is designed to bring hospital‑level care needs for residents in western Columbus County and reduce travel times for families and seniors.
Both projects stem from the same pressures – population growth, increased demand for accessible care, and competition from other health systems.
Leland expands outpatient access, while the western proposal addresses inpatient capacity. Together, they reflect Columbus Regional’s effort to prepare for the region’s future while keeping high‑quality care close to home.
