Community invited to celebrate Toby Hall’s service on Aug. 14 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Lake Waccamaw, NC — A familiar presence at Lake Waccamaw State Park is preparing to step away from his role after years of service to the region’s natural resources. Superintendent Toby Hall, known for his steady leadership and deep knowledge of the lake’s unique ecosystem, is retiring and returning to his home state of Maine later this month.
A public celebration is scheduled for Aug. 14 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Lake Waccamaw State Park Visitors Center at 1866 State Park Drive, giving friends, colleagues, volunteers, and community members an opportunity to wish him well.
Hall has been a central figure at the park for many years, guiding daily operations, supporting environmental education programs, and assisting with conservation efforts tied to the lake’s rare geology and wildlife.
His work is also connected to one of the park’s notable archaeological recoveries: a historic dugout canoe lifted from the lake and informally referred to by staff as the “Toby Hall Canoe,” reflecting his involvement in the preservation effort.
Throughout his tenure, Hall became a recognizable face to visitors and partner organizations, often seen assisting with trail improvements, educational events, and community outreach. His retirement marks a significant transition for the park, which remains one of the region’s most visited natural areas and a key educational resource for Columbus County.
The Aug. 14 gathering is open to the public.
