Columbus County, NC — Nakina Fire & Rescue is proud to announce that the department has been awarded an $8,050.12 grant through the 2026 Volunteer Fire Grant Fund from the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM).

The award was confirmed in an official notice from State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor, issued May 15, 2026.

The grant will be used to purchase four new sets of turnout gear, providing updated and essential protection for firefighters responding to emergencies across the Nakina community.

This year’s award is part of a 50/50 matching grant, meaning the State will contribute $8,050.12, and the department will match that amount for a total project investment of $16,100.24. All equipment purchased through the program must be approved by OSFM.

“Fire and rescue organizations protect our communities large and small across North Carolina, but sometimes their budgets don’t grow with their responsibilities,” Taylor noted in the award letter. “Our emergency service personnel should be supported with the best equipment and supplies needed to do their jobs correctly and safely.”

Nakina Fire & Rescue expressed deep appreciation for the continued support of volunteer departments statewide.

“We are extremely grateful to receive this grant and look forward to getting this equipment ordered and placed into service for our department and the citizens we proudly serve,” the department said.

According to OSFM, Nakina Fire & Rescue has received $87,262.79 in total funding from the Volunteer Fire Department Fund since the program began in 1988. The fund was created by the General Assembly to help volunteer fire departments purchase essential equipment and supplies, with more than $201 million distributed statewide since its inception.
