Thousands of Local Drivers Potentially Affected

Honda has announced a new nationwide safety recall involving nearly 100,000 Honda and Acura vehicles due to a defect in the front passenger seat weight sensor that may cause airbags to deploy when they should remain off.
The recall applies across the Carolinas, including Brunswick, Columbus, and Horry counties, where Honda ownership rates are among the highest in the region.
Federal safety officials say a capacitor inside the seat weight sensor can crack after long-term humidity exposure, leading the system to misread a passenger’s weight. If the sensor fails, the front passenger frontal and knee airbags may deploy even when a child or small occupant is seated. Honda reports no injuries linked to the defect in the United States.
The recall covers several popular models, including select years of the Honda Civic, Accord, CR‑V, Pilot, Odyssey, HR‑V, and Insight, along with Acura MDX, RDX, and TLX models.
Owner notification letters are scheduled to begin July 6, 2026. Dealerships will replace the faulty sensor at no cost.
This action is separate from the long-running Takata airbag inflator recall, which remains one of the largest automotive safety campaigns in US history.
Drivers in Brunswick, Columbus, and Horry counties are urged to check their vehicle identification number on Honda’s recall website or contact Honda customer service at 1.888.234.2138.
Repairs are available at authorized dealerships, and officials recommend scheduling service promptly, especially for families transporting young children.
