Group Plans Prayer Vigil Monday Opposing Countywide Alcohol Referendum

WHITEVILLE — A local ministry is calling on churches and community members to gather Monday outside the Columbus County office building for a prayer vigil opposing the countywide alcohol referendum set for the November ballot.

Milk B4 Meat Ministries, led by Jon Boy Walton, announced the event this week through public social media posts. Walton, who pastors Transformation Church in Williams Township and works in addiction‑recovery outreach, said the vigil is intended to unite believers who oppose expanding alcohol sales in Columbus County.

The gathering is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. at 127 W. Webster Street in Whiteville, timed to coincide with the regular meeting of the Columbus County Board of Commissioners. The referendum itself is not on the meeting agenda, but Walton said the timing is meant to provide a visible show of prayer and unity.

The vigil comes after commissioners voted on April 20 to place a series of alcohol‑sales questions on the November ballot. Voters will decide whether to allow:

  • On‑premises beer and wine sales
  • Off‑premises beer and wine sales
  • Mixed‑drink sales in restaurants, hotels, and private clubs

Commissioner Rickey Bullard cast the lone vote against placing the referendum before voters.

Walton said his opposition is rooted in concerns about addiction, family harm, and the spiritual impact of alcohol abuse. In his announcement, he urged “all preachers, all believers, and all lovers of the brethren” to attend.

The event is open to the public, and organizers say the vigil will focus on prayer, Scripture, and support for individuals and families affected by addiction.
