Copper Wire Stolen From Duke Energy Site in Riegelwood, North Carolina; CCSO Seeking Two Suspects

Riegelwood, NC — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a copper‑wire theft at a Duke Energy facility in Riegelwood, North Carolina, after two individuals were captured on security video entering the secured site and removing grounding wire from multiple transformers.

Deputies responded to the facility at 1337 Cronly Drive after employees discovered a cut gate lock and damaged equipment. According to investigators, ground wires were cut and removed from several transformers and utility poles inside the fenced area.

Duke Energy estimated the total loss and repair costs at approximately $5,000, including materials, labor, and required safety procedures.

Security footage shows two suspects walking through the site. One appears to be wearing a hat, white shirt, and blue jean shorts while carrying what looks like bolt cutters. The second individual is seen wearing a gray shirt, khaki shorts, and black shoes and appears to have red hair.
