BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC — Local fire crews battled a fast-moving woods fire late Thursday night that directly threatened residential structures, an incident officials say was triggered by a blatant violation of the ongoing regional burn ban.

Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue units were dispatched at approximately 10:30 p.m. on April 23, 2026, to the 200 block of Carolina Road following reports of a vegetation fire spreading toward nearby homes.

Law enforcement arrived on the scene first, confirming that the flames were moving quickly through the dry underbrush.

Upon arrival, the crew from Engine 2 immediately deployed a 1³/⁴” attack line to begin a direct knockdown of the fire. Simultaneously, Brush 1 and Brush 2 were assigned to the Charlestown Roadside of the incident. Their objective was to attack the head of the fire and create tactical breaks to slow the spread while providing critical protection to the structures in the immediate area.

The fire was successfully brought under control within 30 minutes. However, crews remained on-site for an additional hour and a half to perform extensive mop-up and overhaul operations, ensuring that no hidden “hot spots” could lead to a rekindle in the dry conditions. All units were cleared and returned to service just before midnight.

Following a scene investigation, fire officials determined the cause was a small campfire. The fire escaped its original location and ignited the surrounding parched grass and brush.

The weather remains very conducive to “explosive fire growth,” according to fire officials. Under current conditions, fires can easily produce spotting, where embers are carried downwind to start new fires well ahead of the original blaze.

Local authorities are reminding the public that the ban on all open burning, which has been in effect since March 28, 2026, is a matter of community safety. “Please be smart and follow the bans,” the department urged. “Help us stay at the station!”
