Brunswick County Moves to Raise Fire Fee Caps and Introduces $349 Million School Bond

Commissioners seek legislative authority for increased fire funding and land-clearing burn regulations while setting a public hearing for major education infrastructure debt.

Bolivia, NC — The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met on Monday, April 20, 2026, to discuss several legislative priorities and a substantial funding proposal for local schools. In a 4-1 vote, the Board moved to seek state legislative approval for an amendment that would allow for an increase in fire fee caps by up to 50%, though a specific provision was included to limit any single increase to no more than 25% during Fiscal Year 2027. Commissioners Cooke, Forte, Thompson, and Williams supported the measure, while Commissioner Sykes voted in opposition.

The Board also took unanimous action regarding local land management and zoning authority. They approved a formal request to the state legislative delegation for statutory authority to regulate open burning specifically related to land clearing activities. Additionally, the Commissioners sent a letter reaffirming their consistent opposition to any state-level limitations on downzoning, maintaining their stance on local control over planning and development.

In a significant move for regional infrastructure, the Board unanimously authorized the introduction of a bond order for $349,600,000 in general obligation school bonds. This process included setting a formal public hearing on the bond order for May 18, 2026. Ahead of that hearing, the Finance Director is required to file a sworn statement of debt and a statement of disclosure, with a public notice to be issued at least six days prior to the event.

The Board will hold its next regular meeting on Monday, May 4, at 3:00 p.m. Community members interested in viewing the full proceedings of the April 20 session can access the meeting replay through the county’s agendas and minutes portal.
