WHITEVILLE — A routine traffic stop by the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Bravo Squad led to one arrest and the discovery of suspected methamphetamine on Monday, according to a sheriff’s office press release.
Deputies initiated the stop on May 25 after observing a vehicle drift left of center on Washington Street before turning onto Legion Drive. As the deputy approached the vehicle, “the odor of marijuana was detected coming from inside,” the release stated.
The driver, Jonathan Kellihan, and a female passenger were asked to step out while deputies continued their investigation. Dispatch then advised that Kellihan had an outstanding warrant. He was taken into custody and transported to the Columbus County Detention Center.
During a search of the vehicle, deputies found a folded one‑dollar bill containing a “small amount of a crystal-like substance” inside a purse on the passenger-side floorboard. The passenger told deputies the substance was not fentanyl and said the only drug that might be in the vehicle was “ice,” a street term for methamphetamine. A field test returned a positive indication, according to the sheriff’s office.
Evidence was processed and secured, and warrants were later obtained for the female passenger. The case remains active.
All individuals listed are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Charges and case statuses may change as investigations and court proceedings continue.
