Southeastern Community College — March 2026
Southeastern Community College’s Rams baseball program is reinforcing its reputation for excellence, not only through athletic performance but through a strong, intentional focus on academics. Head coach Coy Barnett said the team’s success begins in the classroom, where expectations are high and accountability is built into the program’s daily rhythm.
Barnett said academic performance is treated as a core part of player development, not an afterthought. “Academic success is very important; these players are student athletes,” he said. “The progress we make in the classroom pays larger dividends than anything we can do on the field.”
A Standard That Extends Beyond Baseball
Barnett described a program culture built around a “standard of excellence” that shapes how players think, prepare, and carry themselves. That standard, he said, applies equally to practice routines, game preparation, and academic responsibilities.
“I have a standard of excellence in everything we do. How we think, act, prepare and engage is all done with the standard in mind,” Barnett said.
To support that expectation, the coaching staff stays closely involved in monitoring academic progress. Barnett said he routinely checks attendance and grades, a practice that keeps players focused and reinforces the connection between academic discipline and earning a spot in the lineup.
“When you are trying to earn a spot in the lineup, you stay accountable,” he said.
Preparing Problem Solvers
Barnett said academic achievement builds qualities that translate directly to the field and to life after college. Students who excel academically, he noted, tend to be more adaptable and better equipped to solve problems under pressure.
“Success in the classroom shows initiative and adaptability,” Barnett said. “We need problem solvers on the field and in the workforce. Usually, the best players and athletes are very cerebral and their performance shows.”
Goals for the Season and Beyond
Maintaining strong academic performance remains a priority for the program. Barnett said the team aims to keep its overall GPA above 3.0 and takes pride in players who earn recognition on All-Region and All-American Academic teams.
As the season continues, fans are encouraged to support the Rams at home. Tickets are $10, and SCC students receive free admission with a valid student ID.
