HORRY COUNTY, SC — The Horry County School District has agreed to a $175,000 settlement with the family of a student injured in an August 25, 2023 bus incident in the Conway area.
According to the complaint, the 8-year-old second-grader at Pee Dee Elementary School was preparing to step off the bus at her stop when she saw dogs nearby that frightened her. She retreated back inside, and as she did, the bus door closed on her arm. The school bus began to move with her arm still trapped for a time, before coming to a stop.
The lawsuit alleged negligence in the operation of the bus and failure to ensure the student’s safety during unloading. The settlement resolves the case without a trial. No information has been released regarding any disciplinary action or policy changes following the incident.
