BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A two‑month narcotics investigation by the Brunswick County Vice and Narcotics Unit resulted in two arrests on February 5, following a traffic stop conducted with assistance from Road Patrol deputies and a K‑9 unit.
Investigators arrested Charles Demonte McGhee, 26, of Martin Street in Wilmington, after locating approximately 12 grams of fentanyl powder during the stop. According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the amount seized is three times the trafficking threshold under North Carolina law.
McGhee faces multiple felony charges, including:
- Trafficking opium or heroin (3 counts)
- Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule I controlled substance
- Conspiracy to traffic opium/heroin
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
He was booked into the Brunswick County Detention Center, where he remains in custody.
Also arrested was Tanaisha Renae Pridgen, 23, of Henry Street in Wilmington. She is charged with:
- Conspiracy to traffic opium/heroin
- Maintaining a vehicle, dwelling, or place for controlled substances
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
Pridgen was also processed into the Brunswick County Detention Center.
Sheriff Brian Chism said the arrests reflect the department’s ongoing efforts to combat the distribution of fentanyl and other dangerous narcotics in the county.
“This investigation reflects our continued commitment to aggressively target those responsible for distributing deadly narcotics in our communities,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. Chism also thanked residents who report suspicious activity, noting that every tip is followed up on.
The investigation remains active as deputies work to disrupt the flow of illegal drugs into Brunswick County.
