A 37,700‑pound delivery strengthens regional food distribution ahead of peak summer demand
By BC News Staff Writer
The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina’s Wilmington branch has received a shipment of more than 37,700 pounds of shelf‑stable food, marking one of the largest single deliveries to the Cape Fear region this year. The load is part of a national America 250 donation initiative supporting hunger‑relief organizations across the country.
The Wilmington warehouse serves as the primary distribution hub for Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, Pender, and Duplin counties.
Food bank officials confirmed that the new shipment will be incorporated into regular allocations for partner agencies across the region, including rural communities where demand continues to rise.
Shelf‑stable items such as canned proteins, vegetables, pasta, rice, sauces, and beans form the core of emergency food boxes and pantry distributions.
A shipment of this size typically supports tens of thousands of meals and increases the food bank’s capacity during the summer months, when school‑based meal programs pause and household need often spikes.
Regional partner agencies in Brunswick and Columbus counties are expected to receive portions of the shipment through scheduled pickups, mobile food distributions, and community‑based programs. The Wilmington branch coordinates weekly deliveries to dozens of local nonprofits, churches, and community centers that rely on the food bank to maintain steady supply.
The America 250 initiative selected 250 organizations nationwide to receive large‑scale food donations in recognition of the upcoming semiquincentennial observance. The Wilmington branch was among the North Carolina sites chosen for participation.
The food bank continues to encourage community support through volunteer shifts, local food drives, and monetary donations, noting that sustained contributions help stabilize inventory throughout the year.
