Victim’s quick reporting helps deputies intercept more than $11,000 in fraudulent laptop purchases.

Conway, SC — The Horry County Sheriff’s Office says a Conway woman’s swift actions helped uncover an $11,000 identity‑fraud scheme and led to the arrest of a suspect who attempted to retrieve stolen merchandise at a local Walgreens.

Deputies say the victim first contacted law enforcement on June 7, 2026, after discovering her Amazon account had been hacked. A laptop unexpectedly arrived at her home, and when she attempted to log in, she found the password had been changed. After regaining access through Amazon Support, she learned that six laptops totaling $11,673.00 had been purchased using her credit card.

The victim canceled two of the orders and was advised to refuse delivery of the remaining shipments.

On June 10, she notified deputies that the delivery address for the remaining laptops had been changed to the Walgreens in Conway. With the store’s permission, investigators monitored the parking lot until an individual arrived to pick up the packages. The person was detained and questioned.

On June 11, Kelvin Lamont Baxter was charged with one count of Financial Identity Fraud.

The Sheriff’s Office commended the victim for promptly contacting her credit card company, Amazon, and law enforcement, noting that her actions likely prevented additional victims.
