Utility urges Carolinas residents to prepare now as ice and heavy snow threaten multiday outages

CHARLOTTE, NC — Duke Energy is urging customers across the Carolinas to prepare now for possible multiday power outages as Winter Storm Fern approaches this weekend. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain beginning Saturday could bring down trees and power lines, creating hazardous travel and delaying restoration efforts.

More than 18,000 workers — including local crews and teams from several other states — will be staged across the region to respond once conditions are safe. The company is coordinating with emergency officials and positioning equipment in advance of the storm.

Key Points for the Public

  • Winter Storm Fern may produce significant ice and snow impacts.
  • Outages could last multiple days in hard‑hit areas.
  • Residents should charge devices, gather flashlights and batteries, and review emergency plans.
  • Outages can be reported via the Duke Energy app, online, by texting OUT to 57801, or by calling 800‑769‑3766.

Duke Energy reminds customers to stay away from downed power lines and to use generators safely.
