The “Storytime by the Sea” program returns to the 801 Ocean Event Center for a summer of free family magic and oceanfront crafts.

OAK ISLAND, NC — As the Atlantic breeze begins to warm, the Town of Oak Island is preparing to welcome back one of its most cherished seasonal traditions. The Parks and Recreation Department has officially announced the return of Storytime by the Sea, a free community program that pairs the magic of children’s literature with the island’s stunning coastline.

While the program is a long-standing staple for local families, this year brings a scenic change of scenery. The 2026 series will be hosted at the 801 Ocean Event Center, moving the gathering to the town’s premier oceanfront venue located adjacent to the iconic Oak Island Pier.

A Tradition Reimagined

Traditionally held at the Oak Island Cabana, the move to 801 Ocean offers families a “coastal chic” backdrop for their morning adventures. The event center, known for its oversized windows and panoramic views of the Atlantic, provides an all-weather space that ensures the stories continue even if a summer shower rolls in.

“Engaging stories set to the backdrop of breathtaking views make for the perfect way to spend time together as a family,” the department shared in their announcement. The program is designed specifically for children ages 12 and under, blending literacy with creativity through a coastal-themed story reading followed by a hands-on arts and crafts session to take home.

The series will run on select Mondays throughout the summer for one hour – from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

June: 3, 10, 17 and July: 8, 15, 22, 29, ending with August: 5

Registration Details

While the program remains free of charge, the Parks and Recreation Department emphasizes that pre-registration is required to ensure enough craft supplies are available for all participants.
