Three drainage projects boost capacity, reduce flooding concerns across the Longs community

HORRY COUNTY, SC — Three stormwater improvement projects aimed at reducing flooding and improving drainage in the Longs area are now complete, according to Horry County Government.

Over the past month, contractors wrapped up work on Snowberry Drive, Jones Road, and along SC Highway 9 each project designed to increase stormwater flow and strengthen the area’s resilience during heavy rain events.

On Snowberry Drive, in the 57th Place subdivision off Highway 57, crews installed two 10‑foot by 4‑foot box culverts, significantly expanding the roadway’s drainage capacity.

On Jones Road, just off Highway 90, contractors replaced three 36‑inch drainage pipes with two 6‑foot by 5‑foot box culverts, improving conveyance beneath the roadway and reducing the likelihood of backups during major storms.

Along SC Highway 9, near the Highway 57 intersection, a roughly $3 million drainage improvement project is now complete. The work included installing dual relief culverts alongside the existing dual 6‑foot by 6‑foot box culverts, increasing overall capacity and improving stormwater flow through a historically flood‑prone corridor.

All three projects were funded through a South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) grant awarded to Horry County Stormwater.
