RALEIGH — North Carolina lawmakers reached a Medicaid funding deal on April 21, securing enough money to prevent the program from running out of funds in May, 2026.
Legislative leaders confirmed the agreement on the General Assembly’s opening day of session, ending weeks of warnings from state health officials that Medicaid would hit a funding cliff without immediate action. The deal closes the full shortfall needed to keep the program operating through June and adds new oversight measures aimed at reducing waste and fraud.
More than two million North Carolinians rely on Medicaid, and officials say coverage is not expected to be disrupted.
