Several statewide contests remain undecided as candidates prepare for June 23 runoffs.
South Carolina voters returned to the polls Tuesday for a full slate of primary contests, setting the stage for multiple runoffs later this month. While several races produced clear nominees, others ended with no candidate securing the required majority.
In the governor’s race, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson are advancing to a June 23 Republican runoff after neither reached the 50% threshold. On the Democratic side, State Rep. Jermaine Johnson secured his party’s nomination for governor.
The U.S. Senate primary delivered a decisive outcome for Republicans, with incumbent Sen. Lindsey Graham winning his party’s nomination. Democrat Annie Andrews won the Democratic nomination and will face Graham in November. Results are not yet certified and should be confirmed with the South Carolina Election Commission.
Several congressional districts remain unsettled. In the 1st Congressional District, Jenny Costa Honeycutt and Mark Smith advanced to a Republican runoff, while N. Lacore and M. Deford will compete in a Democratic runoff.
The race for Attorney General also moves forward. David Stumbo and Stephen Goldfinch will meet in a Republican runoff after finishing as the top two candidates.
In the Democratic primary for Superintendent of Education, Sylvia Wright secured the nomination.
South Carolina’s runoff elections will be held June 23. Certified results will be released by the South Carolina Election Commission in the coming days.
